Petra Collins just dropped her second collection for her brand, I’m Sorry, sartorially inspired by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s Hawaiian wedding photos. Collins’s legacy of capturing our complex ambivalence towards defining girlhood——is it pink? angry? fetishized? guiless? out of fashion?——are questions she has historically excavated in her photos, and, in light of her legacy, the campaign images are strikingly mundane.

Kurt in checkered pajamas, Courtney in a sheer slip.

Girls smoking in the back of a pickup. Girls floating supine in a pool. Girls skipping out of the ocean. Shot by Richard Kern—who’s a filmmaker! Where’s the narrative Rich?—they’re not dipping their fingers into my brain and wiggling about, except for one shot. The toe-cigarette shot, that got me.
